Flow…
It’s a big buzzword these days, but what does it really mean?
Ask different people and you’ll get many different answers.
Much of that work was modeled from what Charles Garfield did back in the 70’s!
Right now, I just started reading Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, (please don’t ask me to pronounce that last name), which is one of the big texts in the field. That book is from the 90’s.
These are still good and useful; the flow state is something eternal that humans have always experienced…and likely always will.
AND the science of the flow state has come a ways since then.
Scientific research has shown that once you enter flow your brain goes into what is called a Transient Hypofrontality. This is where your pre-frontal cortex of your brain temporality shuts down. And when this happens, you unlock dramatic improvements in performance…even upwards of 300% – 500%.
Flow is something I get into during my training.
- Kettlebell juggling
- Stand Up Challenge Flows
- Intuitive Mobility
- Hand balancing
My training is usually directed at some physical aim like getting stronger or moving better. AND you can also direct your training at accessing flow.
